Krugersdorp, located in the West Rand of Gauteng was founded in 1887 as a mining town east of the Witwatersrand. It was named after Paul Kruger, the President of Transvaal at the time. In 1952, the West Rand Consolidated Mine was the first in the world to extract Uranium as a by-product of the gold refining process. Manganese, iron, asbestos and lime were also mined in more recent times. Nearby Krugersdorp is Kromdraai named "Crooked Turn" after a kink in the meandering Crocodile River. Kromdraai is a protected conservancy of archaeological significance and untouched beauty. Today Krugersdorp is still a gold mining city and a thriving business hub of the greater Gauteng....
